Without a Monitor on duty, the Sawdust Stops!

Our shop stays open entirely thanks to member volunteers who step up as Monitors to oversee safe and smooth operations.

No monitor means the shop has to close.

🛡️ Active Monitor Requirements

To maintain Active Monitor status, you must:

  • Monthly Shift Duty: Perform at least one 4-hour shift each month while residing in Green Valley.
  • Annual Certification: Re-certify each year via the Online Monitor Quiz.
🔒 Locker Rental Eligibility: You must be an Active Monitor (or have other qualifying volunteer duties in the club) to rent an available wall locker each year.

Safety Monitor Rules and Responsibilities

  • Ensure that members are operating machinery in a safe manner. If necessary, find a member with expertise to demonstrate proper technique.
  • Monitor will observe workshop activities from monitor station and will walk around the shop observing member activities.
  • Identify non-members who attempt to use facilities.
  • The on-duty monitor may not work on personal projects, as this would distract them from the primary responsibility.
  • If asked by member or a GVR community member to assist in a procedure, the monitor will identify another member to help. This will ensure that the monitor is not pulled from the primary duties. Monitors are NOT to assist with members projects.
  • Assign a non-monitor member to greet visitors.
  • The on-duty monitor has the authority to have any member removed from the shop if that member fails to comply with shop rules or whose conduct is disruptive or combative.
  • The monitor rules are in place all year. There are NO summer or winter monitor rules.
